The UConn Huskies have made a major statement in the transfer portal, securing a crucial piece for their frontcourt by landing former Seton Hall center Najai Hines. The rising sophomore announced his commitment to the reigning national runners-up via Instagram on Wednesday, marking the Huskies' first portal acquisition this cycle.

Hines, a 6'10", 265-pound force from Plainfield, N.J., showed immense promise in a limited role for the Pirates. In just 18 minutes per game as a freshman, he averaged 6.5 points on an efficient 60.2% shooting, 5.5 rebounds, and an impressive 2.2 blocks. His advanced metrics are even more eye-opening, as he finished second in the entire country in block percentage (16.4%) and 19th nationally in offensive rebound percentage (15.3%), per KenPom.

This move addresses a pressing need for UConn, filling the void left by Tarris Reed Jr., who departed for the NBA after anchoring last season's championship game run. Hines' physical profile and playing style make him a natural successor in Coach Dan Hurley's system. His impact was felt directly against UConn last season, where he notched three blocks in both matchups and nearly powered a Seton Hall upset on Senior Night with an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double.

With backup center Eric Reibe also in the portal, securing Hines is a significant first step, but the Huskies' portal work is far from over. The team remains active in search of depth behind Hines and a replacement for forward Alex Karaban. They hosted former Duke forward and top-20 recruit Nikolas Khamenia on Wednesday, another rising sophomore looking for a larger role.

As the roster for the 2026-27 season begins to take shape, Hines joins a core featuring Silas Demary Jr., Jayden Ross, and a talented incoming freshman class. UConn's aggressive start in the portal signals their clear intent to build another championship-caliber squad, ensuring the Huskies remain a formidable force in the Big East and beyond.
