The UCLA Bruins' dream of a Big Ten Tournament title came to a heartbreaking end on Saturday, as the No. 3 seed fell 7-2 to top-seeded Nebraska at the Maryland Softball Stadium.
The Bruins entered the championship game with momentum that could only be described as dominant. After steamrolling through the quarterfinals with a 6-1 victory and demolishing their semifinal opponent 19-5 via run-rule, UCLA looked unstoppable. But Nebraska's senior right-handed pitcher Jordy Frahm had other plans, orchestrating a defensive clinic that silenced the Bruins' high-powered offense.
The game started as a pitcher's duel, with Frahm and UCLA's senior right-hander Taylor Tinsley keeping batters off the bases in the first inning. The Bruins drew first blood in the second when redshirt freshman infielder Aleena Garcia crossed home plate on a throwing error, giving UCLA a 1-0 lead.
Then came a moment for the history books. In the top of the third, senior utility player Megan Grant launched her 38th home run of the season—a blast that not only extended UCLA's lead to 2-0 but also shattered the NCAA Division I single-season home run record. It was a swing that will be remembered for generations, a testament to Grant's incredible season.
But Nebraska refused to back down. The Cornhuskers loaded the bases in the bottom of the third on a combination of walks and hits, then capitalized on a throwing error to plate three runs. Suddenly, the Bruins found themselves trailing 3-2 for the first time in the game.
Nebraska wasn't done. They crushed a two-run homer in the fourth, extending their lead to 5-2. After a quiet fifth inning, the Cornhuskers added two more runs in the sixth on another home run and a late score, putting the game out of reach.
Tinsley finished with six innings pitched, allowing six hits and seven runs. Frahm, meanwhile, was masterful over seven innings, giving up just two runs and five hits. For the Bruins, it was a bitter end to an otherwise spectacular tournament run.
Now, UCLA turns its attention to the NCAA Tournament selection, which will be announced on ESPN2 this Sunday. With a roster that includes a record-breaking slugger and a team that proved it can compete with the best, the Bruins are poised to make some noise on the national stage.
