It was a nightmare seventh inning for No. 5 UCLA softball on Friday, as the Bruins surrendered six runs in the final frame to fall 8-2 to No. 11 Oregon in the series opener at Easton Stadium. The loss marks UCLA's third in Big Ten Conference play this season, following two earlier defeats at the hands of No. 3 Nebraska at the end of March.
The Bruins came out strong, with sophomore outfielder Rylee Slimp crossing home plate in the bottom of the first to grab an early 1-0 lead. But from there, both teams struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Oregon left two runners on base in the third and loaded the bases in the fourth without pushing a run across, while UCLA also stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the third.
The game remained tight through the middle innings. Oregon finally broke through in the top of the fifth with two home runs to take the lead, but UCLA answered right back. Freshman utility player Jolyna Lamar launched a solo shot to right field in the bottom of the fifth, knotting the game at 2-2. The score stayed locked through the sixth, setting up a dramatic final inning.
Unfortunately for the Bruins, the top of the seventh unraveled quickly. Oregon's bats erupted for six hits, including a three-run homer and a two-run blast, turning a close game into a blowout. UCLA's offense couldn't muster a response, and the Ducks walked away with the series-opening victory.
Senior right-handed pitcher Taylor Tinsley took the loss after allowing 13 hits over seven innings. The Bruins' batters managed just seven hits of their own, unable to apply consistent pressure on the Oregon pitching staff.
UCLA will look to bounce back in Game 2 on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 1:30 p.m. PT. For Bruins fans, it's a chance to see how this team responds to adversity—and maybe pick up some new gear to show support as they fight to stay in the Big Ten race.
