UCLA baseball is stepping up to the plate with a powerful tribute to one of its most legendary alumni. The top-ranked Bruins have unveiled a stunning set of retro uniforms to be worn throughout a weeklong celebration honoring the immortal Jackie Robinson.
The cream-colored jerseys and pants, featuring navy piping and a classic "Bruins" block wordmark, are a stylish nod to the past. While players will sport their own names on the back, every jersey will carry Robinson's iconic and universally retired number: 42. The look was officially revealed by Sonya Pankey, Robinson’s granddaughter, who emphasized that her grandfather was far more than a number.
"He was a pioneer," Pankey stated. "He used his platform to challenge injustice, inspire change and open doors for generations to come."
Robinson's legacy is woven into the fabric of both UCLA and American sports history. Before breaking Major League Baseball's color barrier on April 15, 1947, he was a multi-sport star for the Bruins from 1939 to 1941. This annual celebration coincides with MLB's Jackie Robinson Day, a league-wide recognition of his monumental impact.
The tribute extends far beyond the uniforms. The week's festivities include a pregame ceremony and first pitch by Pankey before Tuesday's game against UC Santa Barbara. Fans can also look forward to special promotions, including legacy hat giveaways and prizes for those wearing Robinson's number, ensuring the entire Bruin community can participate in honoring a true icon.
