Big news for college basketball fans! The NCAA Tournament is getting a major makeover, expanding from 68 to 76 teams for both the men's and women's brackets starting next season. This marks the first significant growth for March Madness since 2011 on the men's side and 2022 for the women's, and it's a move that has coaches like UCF's Johnny Dawkins celebrating.
Dawkins, who voiced his support for expansion last fall, finally got his wish. In October, he argued that with over 365 Division I teams, it only made sense to let more programs experience the tournament. "Look at the NFL and NBA," he said. "Two-thirds of the NBA makes the playoffs, half of the NFL does. We're only letting in about 17% of teams—that's a tiny number."
The expansion, which passed unanimously on May 7, will reshape the tournament's opening round. Instead of the traditional First Four, fans can expect 24 teams battling it out across 12 games. The winners then advance to the Round of 64, keeping the beloved structure intact while adding more drama and opportunity.
Of course, some worry about the tournament becoming watered down. But Dawkins is confident the NCAA can find the sweet spot. "I'm sure we can figure out a number that makes sense," he said. "We can add more teams and still keep March Madness one of the best sporting events in the world."
The move still needs final approval from the men's and women's basketball oversight committees, the Division I Cabinet, and the DI Board of Governors. But with the committee's unanimous vote, it looks like we're in for a bigger—and even more exciting—March Madness. Get ready to fill out those brackets with a few more Cinderella stories!
