The West Coast Conference is expanding its horizons, and the latest addition is a big one. The conference announced Friday that UC Santa Barbara will officially join the WCC for the 2027-28 athletic season, bringing the league's membership to an even dozen for the first time in its history.
This move continues a strategic expansion for the WCC, coming on the heels of recent decisions to add the University of Denver and UC San Diego. Denver will begin competition next season, with the two California schools, UCSB and UCSD, set to follow in 2027-28. This growth comes at a pivotal moment as the conference prepares for the departure of its flagship program, Gonzaga, which is leaving for the Pac-12 after this school year.
WCC Commissioner Stu Jackson hailed the decision, stating, "This is a monumental moment for the West Coast Conference as we grow our membership to 12 institutions for the first time in our history and enhance our national profile with the addition of UC Santa Barbara."
For UCSB, this marks a return to familiar territory. The Gauchos were previously members of the WCC from 1965 to 1969. They will compete in the conference in 13 sports, including marquee programs like men's and women's basketball, soccer, volleyball, and baseball.
The addition of UCSB strengthens a conference that has been building its national reputation. The WCC has earned multiple bids to the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament for seven consecutive seasons, with Saint Mary's and Santa Clara joining Gonzaga in this year's March Madness field. The women's basketball side has also been consistently competitive, sending multiple teams to the tournament in five of the last seven years.
This expansion signals a new era for the West Coast Conference, one focused on a broader geographic footprint and sustained competitive excellence across a wide range of sports.
