There's a new star shining bright in Cincinnati, and his name is Quinton Coats. The UC Bearcats sophomore first baseman has been named a semifinalist for the prestigious Dick Howser Trophy, awarded to college baseball's top player. This marks the second consecutive year a Bearcat has earned this honor, following Kerrington Cross's recognition in 2025.
Coats isn't just any slugger—he's rewriting the record books. The Olathe, Kansas native currently sits fifth nationally with 25 home runs, a feat that already broke Mike Spina's 17-year-old single-season UC record. He accomplished the milestone on May 5 against Oral Roberts, then followed it up with a game-winning three-run blast against Kansas State on May 9, turning a 3-1 deficit into a victory in the eighth inning.
When Coats goes deep, the Bearcats win. UC boasts an impressive 18-3 record when he homers, and his power numbers are elite across the board: fifth nationally in home runs, seventh in total bases (161), and 10th in RBIs (67). He's also riding a 24-game on-base streak, second only to freshman Enzo Infelise's 30-game run earlier this season, and a 10-game hit streak that shows he's adapting to how pitchers approach him.
For context, the Dick Howser Trophy has an incredible pedigree. Past winners include Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes (LSU, 2023), Cincinnati Reds pitcher Brady Singer (Florida, 2018), and Madeira High School's own Andrew Benintendi (Arkansas, 2015). The Bearcats have a history with national player of the year recognition too, with Ian Happ earning Golden Spikes Award semifinalist status in 2015.
With Coats leading the charge, every trip to the ballpark is a chance to witness something special. Whether he's crushing another record-breaking homer or extending his streak, this sophomore is proving he belongs among college baseball's elite.
