Two rising stars from the Washington Huskies softball program have been recognized for their standout debut seasons, earning spots on the All-Big Ten Freshman Team. This honor highlights the bright future ahead for head coach Heather Tarr's squad.
Center fielder Kaycie Burdick wasted no time making her presence felt in the lineup. After consistently reaching base at an impressive clip early in the season, her .457 on-base percentage ranked fourth on the team, earning her a promotion to the leadoff spot where she truly flourished. Burdick finished the year with a .375 batting average—second only to Giselle Alvarez—along with 37 runs scored (also second-best behind Alexis DeBoer), 57 hits, 30 RBIs, 2 home runs, and 20 walks. What's more, she played flawless defense, handling all 59 chances in center field without a single error, tallying 57 putouts and 2 outfield assists across 52 games.
Shortstop Melody Acevedo also earned her place on the All-Freshman Team with a strong offensive campaign. She posted a .353 batting average (fourth on the Huskies), a .935 OPS, 3 home runs, 23 RBIs, 41 hits, and 17 walks in 44 appearances. While her bat was a key asset, the next step in her development will come defensively, where she committed 14 errors on 132 chances for an .894 fielding percentage—an area with plenty of room for growth.
These two freshmen round out a total of six postseason honors for Washington. Alvarez and DeBoer were named to the All-Big Ten First Team, pitcher Morgan Reimer earned Second Team recognition, and catcher Tia Durst represented the Huskies on the All-Big Ten Sportsmanship Team. With this young core already making waves, the future looks bright for Washington softball.
