More money, more problems in the NIL era.

In a move that has left college football fans feeling shortchanged, two powerhouse programs have abruptly canceled a highly anticipated home-and-home series, trading the electric atmosphere of campus stadiums for the sterile environs of neutral sites. The Florida State Seminoles and Georgia Bulldogs originally agreed in 2019 to a two-game series—Florida State was set to host Georgia at Doak Campbell Stadium in 2027, with the return trip to Athens scheduled for 2028. But on Thursday, both schools mutually agreed to scrap those plans.

The decision, announced by FSU athletic director Michael Alford, cites the "evolving scheduling mandates" of both the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southeastern Conference. Both programs now face nine-game conference slates, a reality that didn't exist when the series was first penned seven years ago. While Alford emphasized that the change "will not reduce the total home games on our schedule moving forward," the cancellation robs fans of the quintessential college football experience—tailgating under the oaks in Tallahassee or hearing 92,000 voices roar in Sanford Stadium.

Instead, the two teams are now exploring neutral-site matchups in cities like Orlando, Tampa, or Atlanta. For fans, this means longer travel, higher costs, and a diluted atmosphere. The move is widely seen as a revenue grab, prioritizing financial gain over the traditions that make college football special. In the NIL era, where money increasingly dictates the sport's landscape, this latest development feels like another blow to the loyal supporters who pack stadiums week after week.
