The Washington Capitals have plenty of reasons to be excited about their future, as two of their rookies—Ryan Leonard and Justin Sourdif—have received votes for the 2025-26 Calder Trophy, the NHL's prestigious Rookie of the Year award.
Leonard made a strong impression in his first full NHL season, finishing eighth in the voting. He earned one third-place vote, four fourth-place votes, and 19 fifth-place votes. After making his NHL debut late in the 2024-25 season—where he notched a goal and an assist in nine regular-season games and eight playoff games—Leonard returned with a bang. This season, he tallied 20 goals and 25 assists in 75 games, becoming a key cog in the Capitals' lineup. His impact was especially felt on the power play, and despite a mid-season injury, he bounced back to lead the team in goals through March.
Sourdif, meanwhile, joined the Capitals via a trade with the Florida Panthers and quickly made his mark. He finished 12th in Calder voting with a fourth-place vote and a fifth-place vote. After starting the season as a fourth-line winger, he stepped into a full-time center role following Pierre-Luc Dubois' injury in late October. In 78 games, the 24-year-old recorded 15 goals and 20 assists for 35 points, proving to be a versatile and reliable addition to the squad.
While the Capitals' rookies showed promise, this year's Calder Trophy went to New York Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer, who won unanimously with all 198 first-place votes. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft set a high bar, but for Washington fans, Leonard and Sourdif's recognition signals a bright future ahead.
