Two Canadiens Rookies Among Top Calder Trophy Votes

The NHL has officially announced the winner of the Calder Trophy, awarded annually to the league's top rookie—and while two Montreal Canadiens prospects made a strong case, the honor went to New York Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer.

It's a well-deserved win. At just 18 years old, Schaefer posted an incredible 23 goals from the blue line, an extraordinary feat for any first-year player, let alone a teenager. The young blueliner impressed across the board, and the voters took notice.

Canadiens forward Ivan Demidov finished as the runner-up after a stellar rookie campaign. The 20-year-old led all freshmen in scoring with 62 points in 82 games, showcasing elite playmaking and offensive instincts from day one.

Still, the voting wasn't particularly close. Schaefer earned every single first-place vote, making it a unanimous decision. Demidov received 120 second-place votes, while Anaheim Ducks forward Beckett Sennecke finished third with just 41 second-place nods.

Interestingly, Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes also made a splash in the voting. The rookie netminder received the fourth-most second-place votes, enough to finish fourth overall. Coming into the season, Dobes was expected to play only a handful of games. Instead, he took over as Montreal's de facto starter and has been the team's most valuable player during their playoff run.

Another surprise story: Canadiens forward Oliver Kapanen, who scored 22 goals in 82 games while playing alongside Demidov for much of the season. Although Kapanen has been benched during the playoffs, his ability to finish on high-danger chances was a key factor in Montreal's offensive success this year. Habs history is filled with players who couldn't convert those opportunities—Kapanen made the most of every one.
