The Blue Jays have hit a familiar mark—same record as last year at this point. But that's not exactly comforting, is it? If history is any guide, now is the time to flip the script. Last May, they turned things around and went 16-12.
Eric Lauer didn't have his best stuff on Monday, sitting at 90.3 mph on his fastball—down from last year. While the loss wasn't entirely on him (the offense was nowhere to be found), he'll need to step it up if he wants a spot in the rotation when Shane Bieber returns later this month. Lauer plans to throw a "velo pen" this week, a bullpen session where he'll try to max out his velocity, "building the power from the ground up."
If not Piñango, then who? Davis Schneider is the other option, but he's off to a painfully slow start. Sending him down would mean another lefty in the lineup against left-handed starters—but honestly, that can't be much worse than what we've seen from Davis. He was a 1.3 bWAR player in just half a season last year, so the talent is there. But maybe a stint in Buffalo is what he needs to find his groove again.
Alternatively, Lenyn Jose could be DFA'd. He's a right-handed batter, and swapping him for a lefty would reduce platoon options. Either way, we'll know soon—Addison is expected back by Friday, if not sooner.
And in a lighter note, former Blue Jay Chris Bassitt's kids are having a tough time with his move to the Orioles. They loved Ace, the Blue Jays' mascot, and now they're confused by the new bird logo. "That's not the Blue Jays," they tell him. Hard to blame them—change is tough, even for the littlest fans.
