Dave Allen is back in the spotlight this Saturday, stepping into the ring against Filip Hrgovic in a headline bout at Doncaster's Eco-Power Stadium, live on DAZN. Known for his grit and charm, the 34-year-old "White Rhino" (25-8-2, 20 KOs) is embracing his underdog role with a refreshing lack of pressure.
Allen's last major outing ended in a clear loss to Arslanbek Makhmudov last October, but he quickly bounced back with a lightning-quick tune-up fight in February, dispatching Karim Berredjem in just 57 seconds in Nottingham. Now, he faces a stiffer challenge in Croatia's Filip Hrgovic (19-1, 14 KOs), a heavyweight contender who has been on a roll against British opponents.
Speaking after today's press conference, Allen was candid about the odds stacked against him. "No one thinks I'm gonna beat him, and I know that," he said. "All these people here, all my mates and that, I know they want me to win, but they don't think I'm going to win."
With the fight already a financial success thanks to his ticket-selling prowess, Allen feels liberated. "This is a shot for nothing. They're paying me a fortune to sell the tickets. I've done me job. I'll turn up now, try me best — I don't feel any pressure."
His mindset is simple and fierce. "I'm that kind of guy, I'm one of life's losers that ends up winning. So what have I got to lose? I ain't got nothing to lose. I'm gonna try and punch his f—ing head in, and that's a fact."
Hrgovic, 33, enters the ring with momentum, having defeated Joe Joyce and David Adeleye earlier this year. He's looking to extend his winning streak over British heavyweights after a stoppage loss to Daniel Dubois in 2024. For Allen, this is a chance to defy expectations once again — and prove that in boxing, heart can sometimes trump the odds.
