The Indiana Hoosiers football team made their traditional championship visit to the White House on Monday, meeting with President Donald Trump. It's a time-honored ritual in college football—a celebration of hard work, teamwork, and triumph at the highest level.

But one key player was notably absent: former Hoosiers quarterback Fernando Mendoza. Weeks earlier, Mendoza had announced he wouldn't be joining his teammates, citing a scheduling conflict with OTAs (organized team activities) as the reason. He didn't want to miss a single snap of spring training, showing his dedication to his professional career.

Despite Mendoza's clear explanation, President Trump wasn't thrilled. During the ceremony, Trump addressed the absence directly: "The reason he's not here—he was so nice, he called because he has actually... he's a big fan of ours. You wouldn't believe it, because he didn't show up. I'm not happy, but that's OK. The reason he didn't, because he's at spring training, right?"

Trump continued, adding a twist: "And he's at spring training, like his first day or something. I said, 'You better go there.' But he became Indiana's first—otherwise, if he didn't do that, believe me, I wouldn't have even talked about him. If he was not here for other reasons, like he didn't like Trump or he didn't want to come, I wouldn't have even mentioned him. I'd go through the whole [speech]—I'd talk about how great [the team was], I wouldn't even mention the quarterback's name."

It's a reminder that in sports—as in life—choices come with consequences, and even the best intentions can spark headlines. For Hoosiers fans, the focus remains on the team's incredible achievement and the bright future ahead for all its players.
