Trump Hits FIFA Over Sky-High World Cup Ticket Prices: ‘I Wouldn’t Pay It’

FIFA president Gianni Infantino defended the tournament’s pricing model earlier this week against anger from fans over resale prices and dynamic pricing.

President Donald Trump has weighed in on the soaring ticket prices for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, admitting he wouldn't shell out the roughly $1,000 it costs to attend the United States' opening match against Paraguay next month.

In a phone interview with The New York Post on Wednesday, Trump reacted with surprise when told the price tag for the tournament's first game, scheduled for June 12 in Los Angeles. "I did not know that number," he said. "I would certainly like to be there, but I wouldn't pay it either, to be honest with you."

The comments come as FIFA president Gianni Infantino defends the tournament's pricing model amid growing fan frustration over resale prices and dynamic pricing. The 2026 World Cup, which kicks off June 11 and features 48 teams across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, has already sold over five million tickets. But the hefty cost has sparked backlash, with one European supporters' group even filing an antitrust complaint accusing FIFA of "excessive" pricing.

Trump, who helped bring the tournament to the U.S. during his first term, voiced concern that ordinary fans might be priced out. "If people from Queens and Brooklyn and all of the people that love Donald Trump can't go, I would be disappointed," he said. "I would like to be able to have the people that voted for me to be able to go."

The final is set for July 19 at MetLife Stadium. For fans hoping to catch the action live, the debate over ticket affordability is far from over—and it's a reminder that while soccer's biggest event is a spectacle, getting in the door might require a deep wallet.
