The Detroit Tigers' injury report is starting to show some real signs of life, and for a team that keeps its medical updates close to the vest, that's a welcome development. While no immediate returns are on the horizon, the timelines for several key players to rejoin the active roster are looking increasingly promising.
The most encouraging news comes from the mound, where both right-hander Casey Mize and reliever Will Vest threw bullpen sessions on the Tigers' off day in New York this past Monday. Mize, who has been sidelined with a groin strain, took things a step further with a live batting practice session—a strong indicator that he's nearing either a rehab assignment or perhaps even a direct return to the big league club. Vest, dealing with forearm inflammation, threw a standard bullpen, which for a reliever means his path back can accelerate quickly once he's cleared. The key now will be monitoring how both pitchers responded physically to the workload.
In the bullpen, Beau Brieske and Connor Seabold are also making strides. Both relievers have advanced their rehab assignments from Single-A Lakeland to Triple-A Toledo, signaling they're closing in on a return. Brieske, however, is on the 60-day injured list and won't be eligible to come back for roughly another two weeks regardless of his progress.
Perhaps the most intriguing update involves right-hander Troy Melton, who was shut down early in spring training with forearm inflammation. After a cautious buildup, Melton has been throwing short outings in Lakeland with good velocity, and he appears to have avoided any of the more serious complications that can accompany such injuries. With his return eligibility still about two weeks away, the Tigers have time to build up his innings and get him sharp—potentially as a rotation option. Depending on how Mize's recovery unfolds, Melton could factor into the Tigers' plans down the stretch.
