In a major recruiting development, Michigan State has surged to the top of the list for Lawrence Kanneh, a promising defensive end from Columbus (Ohio) Whitehall-Yearling. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound junior received a scholarship offer from the Spartans this week, marking a pivotal moment in his rapidly rising recruitment.
While Kanneh may not yet be a household name outside of Columbus, his head coach, Cameron Barker, is determined to change that. Barker is building Whitehall-Yearling into a program that college coaches can't ignore, and Kanneh is the perfect cornerstone. With an impressive 11.2-second 100-meter dash and a stellar 3.8 GPA, he's the kind of two-sport athlete who checks every box for major universities.
"At the beginning of the recruiting process, Lawrence had only been to one camp, a D2 camp close to home," Barker explained. "We went through his HUDL, updated it, sent the film out, and Toledo was one of the first schools to come back with an offer. Then the second round of schools, we started sending it out to more coaches, and Michigan State was one of them."
It's easy to see why the Spartans were intrigued. Last season, Kanneh was a disruptive force in the backfield, racking up 23 tackles for loss and 12½ sacks. That film caught the attention of Michigan State defensive line coach Winston DeLattiboudere III, who made a personal stop at Whitehall-Yearling to see Kanneh in action.
"Coach Debo came in with matching energy to ours," Barker said. "He fell on their radar, they came in for a workout, and within 24 hours, had initiated the process of 'let's offer and let's get this official visit started.'"
That official visit is now set for June 5, and the Spartans are making it clear they're serious about landing Kanneh. Edge-defenders coach Andrew Bindelglass followed up DeLattiboudere's visit with a stop of his own, underscoring Michigan State's commitment.
"He doesn't understand what it meant when I said he had a Power Four opportunity," Barker said. "He's a 3.8 kid who wants to go into engineering. He's very mature, but when you talk about playing in front of 100,000 people, it didn't really click right away. He's just starting to understand college recruiting."
Kanneh is a quick learner, though. USF, Marshall, Appalachian State, and others have already offered, while Pittsburgh, Northwestern, and Wisconsin are among the schools that have begun making contact. For now, though, Michigan State sits firmly at the top of his list—and this recruitment is only heating up.
