In a trade that took nearly two years to fully materialize, the Los Angeles Chargers' acquisition of defensive back Elijah Molden from the Tennessee Titans is now officially complete. The deal, finalized in August 2024, has proven to be a key move for the Chargers' secondary.
Since joining the team, Molden has been a consistent presence on defense, starting in 24 of his 27 appearances across two seasons. While his 2025 campaign was interrupted by a five-game injury absence, he still managed to record 52 tackles when on the field. His contributions didn't go unnoticed, as the Chargers secured his future with a three-year contract extension ahead of the 2025 season. That deal keeps Molden in Los Angeles through the 2027 season, after which he'll become a free agent.
The trade's ripple effects extended beyond the Chargers and Titans. The seventh-round pick originally involved in the Molden deal changed hands multiple times. The Titans first traded it to the New York Jets alongside cornerback Jarvis Brownlee in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick. The Jets then sent that same pick to the Miami Dolphins as part of the Minkah Fitzpatrick trade. Ultimately, the Titans used the sixth-round pick they received to select Indiana center Pat Coogan in the 2026 NFL Draft.
For Chargers fans, the Molden trade is a reminder that roster-building often involves patience and long-term planning. The team now has a reliable defensive piece locked in for the next two seasons—a solid return for a deal that took nearly two years to fully close.
