When you're the two-time MVP and the heart of a championship team, you expect a little help. For Nikola Jokić, that help finally arrived this season in the form of Jamal Murray earning his first All-Star nod. It was a milestone moment—the first time in Jokić's 11-year career that a teammate cracked the All-Star, All-NBA, or All-Defense lists. But here's the hard truth: that moment of triumph might just be the signal for a painful goodbye.

The Denver Nuggets are at a crossroads. After their magical 2023 title run, the roster has aged, the cap sheet has ballooned, and the team finds itself sliding further from contention. Thursday's first-round exit to the Timberwolves was a sobering reality check. Jokić, ever loyal, told reporters, "I still want to be a Nugget forever." But he also admitted the team is "far away" from where it needs to be. When asked about potential changes, he didn't mince words: "That's not my decision. Definitely, if we were in Serbia, we would all get fired."

That's about as loud as Jokić gets. And it might be the wake-up call Denver needs.

So here's the uncomfortable question: Is it time to trade Jamal Murray? At this point, it's hard to see another path forward. The Nuggets are staring down a future of luxury tax penalties and diminishing returns. Dealing Murray now, while his value is still high, could bring back the pieces needed to build a real supporting cast around Jokić before it's too late.

This isn't the first time we've sounded this alarm. A year ago, the argument was that Jokić had every right to demand a trade. He didn't. Instead, the front office made a bold—and some would say unorthodox—move, firing head coach Michael Malone and GM Calvin Booth just days before the season ended. Rather than look outside, they promoted from within: Ben Tenzer and Jonathan Wallace took over the front office, and longtime assistant David Adelman stepped into the head coach's chair.

It was a gamble. And so far, it hasn't paid off. Now, with the window closing and Jokić's prime ticking away, Denver might have no choice but to make the toughest call of all. Three trade scenarios could give the Nuggets the help Jokić desperately needs—and finally put the team back on the path to contention.
