Matt Rempe's infectious, boyish charm has made him a fan favorite in New York since his explosive NHL debut. But at the Rangers' season-ending breakup day, the towering 6'9" forward cut a more serious figure, reflecting on a campaign derailed by injury and frustration.
Rempe's season was essentially over before it truly began. After a promising start where he helped forge the Rangers' fourth line into a hard-hitting, defensive identity unit, a single fight on October 23rd changed everything. A bout with San Jose's Ryan Reaves resulted in a significant thumb injury, requiring not one, but two surgeries and limiting him to just 26 games where he was rarely at full strength.
"Being hurt since October, obviously very disappointing for myself," a subdued Rempe told reporters. "I started the year well... when I came back, that wasn't me at all."
Yet, for a player who has built his reputation on resilience, this lost season is merely fuel. Last summer, he answered the organization's call to become a more disciplined, complete player, earning Coach Mike Sullivan's trust. That same determined mindset is now focused on his recovery.
"I’ve got a lot of hunger for next year," Rempe declared, his tone shifting from reflection to resolve. "I’m sure I’ll come back with vengeance."
For Rangers fans and the league's enforcers alike, that's a promise that signals the intimidating, energetic force known as Matt Rempe is already preparing for a major comeback.
