The tough times keep getting tougher for Suryakumar Yadav in IPL 2026. Mumbai Indians' star batter was dismissed for a first-ball duck during his team's clash against defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Sunday, adding another frustrating chapter to what has been a challenging season for the right-hander.
The drama unfolded on the final delivery of the third over. Veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, already on a roll after dismissing Rohit Sharma just one ball earlier, delivered a full-length ball outside off stump with just enough movement off the surface to test Suryakumar. Attempting an attacking drive after shuffling across his crease, the MI batter could only manage a thick outside edge. Virat Kohli, alert at first slip, dived low to his right and completed a sharp catch, leaving Mumbai Indians in deeper trouble.
It's been a stark contrast to last season's heroics for Suryakumar. The 35-year-old was Mumbai Indians' highest run-scorer in IPL 2025 with 717 runs in 16 matches, but he has managed just 195 runs in 11 matches this season at a strike rate of 144.44. For a player known for his 360-degree stroke play and ability to dominate bowling attacks, this dip in form has been uncharacteristic.
Earlier, RCB captain Rajat Patidar won the toss and elected to bowl first at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur. "We will bowl first. Pretty obvious, the surface is good and hard. We will try to restrict them and go on the chase," Patidar said during the toss. "Conditions are not unfamiliar. Good supporters and great outfield, and everyone is looking forward to the game."
Both teams entered the match with contrasting recent fortunes. RCB came into the game after consecutive defeats against Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants, which dropped them to fourth on the points table. Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, were riding high after a thrilling win over LSG where they chased down 229, but still languished in ninth place and needed a victory to keep their playoff hopes alive.
For cricket fans and jersey collectors alike, this season has been a reminder that even the best batters face rough patches. But if Suryakumar's career has taught us anything, it's that he has the class and determination to bounce back stronger.
