There's something special happening out west, and if you're a Rangers fan, it's bittersweet to watch. Chris Kreider and Jacob Trouba are absolutely thriving in Anaheim, reminding us all of the grit and heart they brought to Madison Square Garden.
Remember Trouba as the hard-hitting, no-nonsense captain? Or Kreider as the scoring machine and veteran mentor? It's hard not to feel a pang of nostalgia and think, "Wish you were here."
But the real story is John Tortorella. Yes, that Torts—the fiery, passionate coach who brought a blue-collar, New York style of hockey to the Big Apple. He was the kind of leader who made you want to run through a wall, the hockey equivalent of Vince Lombardi. And let's be honest, his slight New England accent only made him more endearing to us Gothamites.
Now, Torts is doing it again. He's got the Vegas Golden Knights playing that same relentless, in-your-face hockey. In case you missed it, his Knights are in the second round, leading Anaheim two games to one. He's even unlocked something special in Mitch Marner, turning him into a playoff monster. Last night, Marner scored a natural hat trick and added an assist, leading all NHL players in playoff scoring. That's the Torts touch.
My gut says 99% of Rangers fans are rooting for John. He's got the ice savvy we know and love, plus a surplus of guts that's key to his success. It's a revival worth celebrating, even if it's happening in a different jersey.
