On Wednesdays, we tee up a chat with our Golfer of the Week—and this week, we're celebrating a hometown hero's triumphant return.
Garrett Cox, a 31-year-old former standout from Mahomet-Seymour's 2010 state championship golf team, recently made a winning homecoming at Lake of the Woods Golf Course. Teaming up with his best friend, Lyle Burns, Cox clinched victory at last month's Ben Sieg 2-Person Season Opener Tournament.
Life has taken Cox far from his Illinois roots—he moved to Charlotte, N.C., eight years ago, where he now works as a sales rep for TaylorMade Golf. But his connection to home runs deep. "I love going back there," Cox shared. "Lyle's my best friend, and it was cool to team up with him and spend the weekend with his family."
This summer, however, his annual visit for the M-S fundraiser might be sidelined. Cox and his wife, Amanda, are expecting their first child—a baby girl—due in August. Priorities are shifting, but the memories of his championship days remain vivid.
When asked about his best memory from that 2010 state title season, Cox smiled: "Coach Mills used to drive our short mini-bus, and we'd all be singing or rapping songs after each tournament." As for his IHSA medal? It's tucked away in a shadow box his mother made, complete with a photo of him and the leaderboard. "It's in my attic," he admitted. "It might be time to move it to my office."
When he's not competing, Cox finds his favorite escape at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina—a course that inspires golfers of all levels. Whether you're chasing a state title or just a weekend round with a friend, it's moments like these that remind us why we love the game.
