The long-running saga surrounding Italian footballers Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Fagioli has finally reached its conclusion, as authorities have handed down the final punishments for their involvement in illegal gambling activities.
Both players had already served lengthy suspensions between 2023 and 2024 for betting on football matches—a practice strictly prohibited for professional players. In October 2023, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) confirmed Tonali would serve a 10-match ban, pay a €20,000 fine, and participate in awareness campaigns about gambling addiction. Fagioli received a seven-month suspension and a €12,500 fine.
However, those were only the sporting penalties. A separate criminal investigation was launched in April 2025, focusing on allegations that the two players used illegal betting platforms, promoted these sites among fellow professionals, and even opened accounts and handled payments on behalf of teammates.
According to reports from Italian outlets including Corriere dello Sport, that criminal investigation has now officially closed. Tonali has been ordered to pay a €78,000 fine, while Fagioli received a one-month suspended prison sentence.
For fans and the football world at large, this marks the end of a cautionary tale—one that serves as a stark reminder of the pressures and pitfalls that can come with life as a professional athlete. As both players look to rebuild their careers, their story underscores the importance of staying grounded, both on and off the pitch.
