Tom Izzo, the legendary Michigan State head coach, has never been one to shy away from sharing his thoughts—and the recent approval of NCAA Tournament expansion is no exception. Starting this season, the tournament will grow from 68 to 76 teams, adding eight more at-large bids. That means 52 teams will automatically land in the traditional 64-team bracket, while the remaining 24 will battle through play-in games, reminiscent of the First Four format we've seen in recent years.

In a conversation with CBS Sports' Matt Norlander, Izzo opened up about the change, offering a balanced but cautious perspective. "I understand it from both sides," he said. "I would rather it stay the same, but as you know, coaches weren't asked at all." It's a telling admission from a coach who has seen the game evolve dramatically over his tenure—from the beloved 64-team format to the current expansion.

Izzo acknowledged the pressures driving this shift, particularly the growth of major conferences like the Big Ten, which now boasts 18 teams. "There's so many more teams. It's hard for everybody. It's hard to please everybody," he explained. At the same time, he expressed empathy for smaller programs, noting his own roots in Division II basketball. "I feel for the lower, smaller programs. I hate to break something that isn't broken."

Perhaps his most striking observation was about the slippery slope of expansion itself. "It's like NIL," Izzo said. "You can get to $10 million, you still won't have enough. You can have $20 million and it's not enough. If we go to 76, 96, it's never going to be enough." It's a sentiment that resonates in an era where college basketball is navigating constant change—from conference realignment to the transfer portal. For fans and players alike, the tournament's magic has always been about the journey, not just the size of the field. And as Izzo hints, sometimes the best things come in familiar packages.
