Manchester United have reportedly begun discussions about extending Tom Heaton's contract, keeping the veteran goalkeeper at Old Trafford for another season.

Despite turning 40 last month and not featuring in a competitive match for over three years, Heaton's influence extends far beyond the pitch. The Chester-born shot-stopper, who came through United's academy after starting his career at Wrexham as both a goalkeeper and midfielder, has become a vital dressing room presence.

Heaton's first spell at United saw him fail to make a first-team appearance, with loan moves to Royal Antwerp and Cardiff City before a permanent switch to the Welsh side in 2010. From there, his career flourished at Bristol City, Burnley, and Aston Villa, earning three England caps along the way. He returned to United on a two-year deal in 2021 after being released by Villa.

While playing opportunities have been scarce, Heaton has evolved into a leadership figure. He was a key ally for former manager Erik ten Hag and was appointed to Ruben Amorim's six-man leadership team alongside Harry Maguire, Diogo Dalot, Lisandro Martinez, Noussair Mazraoui, and Bruno Fernandes. This quasi-coaching role is expected to continue under interim boss Michael Carrick, with INEOS reportedly keen on securing new deals for both men.

According to The Sun, United are "exploring a new contract" as Heaton's current deal expires in June, after he signed a one-year extension last year. The report adds that the club is open to offering fresh terms, with Heaton also mentoring young goalkeeper Radek Vitek, who recently returned to Carrington for training after an impressive loan spell at Bristol City.
