Toluca delivered a stunning performance Wednesday night, routing LAFC 4-0 to punch their ticket to the CONCACAF Champions Cup final in what promises to be an all-Mexican showdown against UANL Tigres.
The match came alive in the second half when Helinho calmly converted a penalty in the 49th minute, breaking the deadlock and shifting momentum firmly in Toluca's favor. Just nine minutes later, Everardo del Villar doubled the lead with a well-taken strike in the 58th minute, leaving LAFC scrambling for answers.
Portuguese striker Joao Paulo Dias, better known as "Paulinho," put the exclamation point on the victory with two stoppage-time goals, sealing the semifinal series 5-2 on aggregate for the Red Devils.
This marks the first all-Mexican final in the continental tournament since 2021, when Monterrey defeated Club América. The May 30 decider guarantees that a Mexican club will hoist the trophy for the fourth consecutive year—the last MLS team to claim the title was the Seattle Sounders back in 2022.
For Toluca, the stakes are historic. The club is chasing its third Champions Cup title and first since 2003, when they defeated Morelia in another all-Mexican final. What makes this run even more impressive? Toluca achieved the victory without two Mexico national team stars, Alexis Vega and Jesús Gallardo, who were called up for World Cup preparations.
On the other side, LAFC's hopes of a third final appearance in four tournament tries came crashing down. The Black and Gold had previously reached the Champions Cup Final in 2020 and 2023 but were never able to find their rhythm Wednesday. Their night went from bad to worse when Ryan Porteous was sent off in the 88th minute, leaving them to finish the match with 10 men.
With the final set, soccer fans across North America are already circling May 30 on their calendars. Will Toluca reclaim past glory, or will Tigres continue Mexico's dominance on the continental stage?
