The Toledo Mud Hens, the Detroit Tigers' Triple-A affiliate, have made a strategic move to bolster their leadership for the remainder of the season. On Tuesday, the team announced that Gary Jones, a seasoned baseball veteran and former Tigers coach, will step in as manager.
Jones, 65, brings a wealth of experience to the Mud Hens' dugout. After spending the last four seasons on manager AJ Hinch's staff in Detroit—coaching first and third base, as well as working with outfielders—he stepped away from coaching earlier this year. Now, he's returning to the game to guide Toledo through the stretch run.
This change comes after a period of transition for the Mud Hens. Mike Hessman, who had been serving as interim manager, will return to his role as hitting coach. Hessman took over last week when Gabe Alvarez was dismissed due to a violation of club policy.
Jones is no stranger to minor league leadership. With 18 seasons of managerial experience under his belt—10 at the Triple-A level, where he posted a 652-605 record—he knows how to develop talent and navigate the grind of a long season. Notably, he managed the Lehigh Valley IronPigs from 2018 to 2021 before joining the Tigers' big-league staff.
For fans of the Tigers and their farm system, this hire signals a commitment to stability and experience. As the Mud Hens look to finish strong, Jones' deep baseball knowledge and history of player development could be just what the team needs to close out the season on a high note.
