TKO execs push back against claims of UFC quality drop: ‘We don’t buy it’

TKO, the powerhouse behind UFC and WWE, is firing back at critics who say the quality of UFC events has taken a hit. While the company is riding high on record-breaking business — including plans for a new Zuffa Boxing venture — some fans are voicing concerns about a perceived decline in fight cards. WWE audiences have been particularly vocal about rising costs and cutbacks, and UFC supporters are starting to notice too.

During a recent TKO earnings call, an investor didn't hold back, asking executive Mark Shapiro directly about the weaker UFC lineup in 2026. "There's been a lot of noise about weaker UFC cards lately," the investor said. "In your view, what's going on and what are you guys doing to improve?"

Shapiro didn't mince words. "Look, bottom line is we don't buy it," he replied. "The product is great at the UFC. The brand has never been stronger. Our reach has never been greater. The foundational elements are in concrete." He pointed to recent events as proof — UFC 327 in Miami, which he said "blew people away," and a sold-out Fight Night in Perth, Australia, that showcased "extraordinary sport."

Shapiro emphasized that UFC is always in "building phase," scouting the best up-and-coming talent worldwide and matching them in compelling fights. He highlighted a new wave of young fighters climbing the rankings, pushing out veterans to make room for fresh faces. "Strong personalities are busting just now," he said, name-dropping Joshua Van, Brazilian Carlos Pretes, and undefeated Michael Morales as examples of the next generation taking over.

For fans who love the sport's evolution, this shift signals an exciting new era — even if some miss the old guard. Whether you're backing the rising stars or sticking with the legends, one thing's clear: the UFC is betting big on its future.
