After a legendary 14-year WNBA career that cemented her as one of the greatest to ever play the game, Tina Charles has officially announced her retirement from basketball.
"Fifteen years at the professional level and a lifetime of love for this game. I've experienced the highest highs and the lowest lows, and I'm thankful for all of it," Charles wrote in an emotional social media post. "This game gave me everything, and I'll miss it deeply."
The journey began in Queens, New York, where Charles honed her skills at the storied Christ The King High School before taking her talents to UConn in 2006. Over four dominant years in Storrs, she helped the Huskies achieve something no other program has matched—back-to-back undefeated seasons in 2009 and 2010. As a senior, she swept college basketball's top honors, claiming the Wooden Award, Naismith Trophy, and AP and USBWA National Player of the Year recognition. Charles left UConn as the program's all-time leading scorer (2,346 points) and rebounder (1,367), records that still stand today.
Selected first overall by the Connecticut Sun in the 2010 WNBA Draft, Charles wasted no time making her mark, earning Rookie of the Year honors before capturing league MVP in 2012. "From the moment Tina Charles stepped onto the court as the first overall pick, she set a standard of excellence that would define not only her career, but our franchise as well," the Sun said in a statement.
After four seasons in Connecticut, Charles returned to her hometown to play for the New York Liberty from 2014 to 2019, where she became a beloved figure both on and off the court. Following a brief hiatus during the 2020 bubble season, she suited up for the Washington Mystics in 2021, earning her eighth and final All-Star selection. She split the 2022 season between the Phoenix Mercury and Seattle Storm before taking a year off, then returned in 2024 with the Atlanta Dream. In a fitting full-circle moment, she signed with the Connecticut Sun for 2025, finishing her career where it all began.
