As the 2025/26 Serie A season enters its final stretch, all eyes turn to San Siro for one last time this summer. AC Milan will host Atalanta on Matchday 36 in what promises to be a thrilling encounter. Before we look ahead, let's step into the Time Machine and revisit a memorable clash between these two sides from 26 February 2023.

Back then, the Rossoneri were navigating a turbulent period. After a string of frustrating results—draws against Roma and Lecce, heavy defeats to Lazio and Sassuolo, and a derby loss—Milan needed a spark. Wins over Torino and Monza steadied the ship, and a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Tottenham in the Champions League Round of 16 first leg hinted at a resurgence. But this night was about more than just tactics.

For starters, the team debuted their striking Fourth Kit, a visual statement that matched their intent on the pitch. Even more significant was the return of Mike Maignan, who reclaimed his place between the posts after a five-month injury layoff. The Frenchman's presence immediately lifted the team's confidence.

Milan came out firing. In the seventh minute, Rafael Leão set up Olivier Giroud, but the Frenchman fired over. The breakthrough came in the 25th minute when Giroud's aerial pass found Theo Hernández, who unleashed a fierce left-footed volley from the edge of the area. The ball struck the post, ricocheted off goalkeeper Juan Musso's back, and nestled into the net. Just before halftime, Leão threatened again, bursting forward but lacking precision with his finish.

The second half saw Milan double down. Brahim Díaz delivered a gem for Giroud, whose pinpoint attempt was denied by Musso. Seconds later, Leão's set piece forced another save. In the 69th minute, a sweeping move involving Giroud, Sandro Tonali, Leão, Díaz, and Tonali again ended with Leão unable to convert from close range under pressure from Joakim Mæhle. A minute later, Hernández won the ball back, and Leão released Junior Messias, but the Brazilian dragged his left-footed effort wide.

Then came a moment every Milan fan had been waiting for: Zlatan Ibrahimović made his seasonal debut. The Swedish legend's presence electrified the stadium, and in the 86th minute, it paid off. A brilliant pass from Leão sent Messias through on goal, and this time he kept his composure, lifting a cool finish over the goalkeeper to seal a 2-0 victory.

It was a night of returns—Maignan, Ibra, and the winning form that would carry Milan through the season's crucial final weeks. Now, as the Rossoneri prepare to face Atalanta once again, the echoes of that February evening remind us that at San Siro, anything is possible.
