A.J. Hinch would not confirm Ty Madden as Saturday’s starter as the Tigers continue battling rotation chaos.

The Detroit Tigers' 2026 season was supposed to be defined by a deep, dominant pitching staff. Instead, that strength has unraveled into the team's most pressing concern, leaving manager A.J. Hinch in a constant state of improvisation.

With ace Tarik Skubal recovering from elbow surgery, veteran Justin Verlander and Casey Mize both on the injured list, and left-hander Framber Valdez serving a suspension, the Tigers are scrambling just to fill innings. The uncertainty reached a new peak Friday when Hinch refused to commit to Ty Madden as Saturday's starter against the Kansas City Royals—despite Madden being listed as the probable pitcher.

"I don't know," Hinch told the Detroit Free Press when asked directly about Madden's status. That non-answer perfectly encapsulates the chaos gripping Detroit's rotation.

The Tigers are now operating on a day-to-day basis, adjusting based on workload, bullpen availability, and who survives each game healthy. Even so, Madden has made a compelling case for a longer look. The right-hander was recalled after Skubal's surgery and immediately impressed in Monday's loss to the Boston Red Sox, tossing five scoreless innings with seven strikeouts as a bulk reliever.

Now, Detroit is considering stretching Madden into a traditional starting role—though that decision may hinge on how Friday night's game unfolds.

"I'll let Q [Royals manager Matt Quatraro] know tonight after the game," Hinch said, "depending on who we use and how we go into tomorrow. I'll trade him out for Sunday's starter."

The Tigers still haven't mapped out the rest of the weekend series, especially with Valdez sidelined by his five-game suspension. What began as a deep and reliable rotation has been reduced to constant improvisation, with Jack Flaherty now the only healthy member left standing.
