The Detroit Tigers' pitching staff just can't catch a break. Just when reinforcements seemed on the horizon, another arm went down on Friday afternoon.
In the top of the third inning against the Toronto Blue Jays at Comerica Park, right-hander Ty Madden took a frightening line drive off his pitching arm. The 107.9 mph comebacker off the bat of Yohendrick Piñango forced Madden to exit the game after just two batters, replaced by reliever Burch Smith.
The injury came at a particularly tough moment for the Tigers, who were already navigating a bullpen game. Madden entered with two outs in the second inning, taking over after opener Brenan Hanifee and reliever Brant Hurter. The plan was for him to handle the bulk of the innings, but instead, Detroit found itself using its fourth pitcher with only six outs recorded—a major disruption to manager A.J. Hinch's game plan.
Before the injury, Madden had been showing promise in his limited action this season, posting a 2.38 ERA over 11⅓ innings across three appearances, including two in a bulk relief role. His performance had been a bright spot for a staff dealing with its share of bumps and bruises.
For now, the Tigers and their fans are left waiting for an update on Madden's condition. In a game where every pitch counts, this is one setback that hits especially close to home—literally.
