The Detroit Tigers' pitching staff just can't catch a break. Just as the team was hoping to stabilize its rotation, another arm went down on Friday night.

In the top of the third inning against the Toronto Blue Jays at Comerica Park, right-hander Ty Madden took a 107.9 mph line drive off his pitching arm. The comebacker, hit by Yohendrick Piñango, sent Madden to the ground before he was quickly examined by a team trainer. After a brief moment, he was pulled from the game and replaced by right-hander Burch Smith.

Madden had entered in the second inning with the Tigers trailing 2-0, following opener Brenan Hanifee and reliever Brant Hurter. The plan was for him to handle the bulk of the innings in what manager A.J. Hinch had set up as a bullpen game. Instead, Madden faced just two batters before his night ended abruptly, forcing the Tigers to use their fourth pitcher of the game with only six outs recorded.

It's a tough blow for the 2026 season, where Madden had been building momentum with a sharp 2.38 ERA over 11⅓ innings in two previous bulk relief appearances. For now, the Tigers and their fans wait for updates on his condition, hoping the injury isn't serious.

For a team already searching for consistency on the mound, losing a promising arm like Madden—even temporarily—is the last thing they needed. Stay tuned for more updates as the Tigers navigate this latest setback.
