The Detroit Tigers have parted ways with Triple-A Toledo manager Gabe Alvarez following allegations of an "inappropriate" text message sent to a female colleague, according to a statement Alvarez provided to ESPN.
The Tigers announced Alvarez's dismissal on Tuesday, May 5, offering little detail beyond citing "a violation of club policy." For fans following the team's minor league system, this abrupt move raised immediate questions about what had transpired behind the scenes.
In his statement to ESPN, Alvarez acknowledged the misstep. "I sent a single text message to a colleague that I intended as a lighthearted joke," he said. "Shortly after sending it, I recognized that the message was inappropriate and did not reflect the values and judgment I strive to uphold, and I immediately reached out to clarify my intent." He emphasized that the incident was isolated and not indicative of his professional conduct over a long career, adding, "I never intended to cause discomfort or offense, and I regret that the message created this situation."
Alvarez had been named Toledo's manager ahead of the 2025 season after spending three seasons as Double-A Erie's skipper, where he was regarded as a rising coaching talent within the organization. His departure marks a significant shift for the Mud Hens, who now turn to a familiar face in the dugout.
Stepping in as interim manager is Mike Hessman, who has served as Toledo's hitting coach since 2023. Hessman's connection to the Tigers runs deep—he previously worked with the big league club before accepting a demotion to the minor league staff after the 2022 season. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch expressed confidence in the transition during his pregame media session Tuesday ahead of a matchup with the Boston Red Sox. "I talked to Hess this morning to establish the cadence that goes on with him," Hinch said. "Obviously, I don't have a comment on the whole thing. In terms of my confidence in Hess and the transition, he's going to handle it very well. He communicates. He's got the trust of the players."
Hinch also highlighted Hessman's ability to bridge the gap between Toledo and Detroit. "He and I talked regularly already, even as he was the hitting coach. Now as the manager, the conversations change a little bit, but we have full confidence in Hess being able to continue on in making our players better and communicating to me and my staff what he needs to in order to get the players who come up here ready to play."
For Tigers fans, this shakeup in the minor league ranks underscores the organization's commitment to maintaining a professional and respectful workplace culture, even as it navigates a season full of promise and development.
