Detroit is adding to its infield depth.

The Detroit Tigers are making a savvy move to shore up their infield depth, acquiring veteran shortstop Zack Short from the Washington Nationals in a Friday trade that flew under the radar. The deal, confirmed by Evan Woodbery of MLive Media Group, sends cash considerations or a player to be named later to Washington, with Short initially heading to Triple-A Toledo, per Darragh McDonald of MLB Trade Rumors.

Short, 30, is no stranger to the Motor City—he spent his first three MLB seasons with the Tigers from 2021 to 2023, appearing in a career-high 110 games during his final stint. Known for his defensive versatility, Short can handle shortstop, second base, and third base, giving Detroit a reliable glove to plug into the middle infield. While his bat has never been a standout, he posted a .220/.291/.380 slash line with two home runs and seven RBIs in 22 games for the Houston Astros in 2025.

The timing of this addition is crucial for the Tigers, who are navigating a wave of injuries. Trey Sweeney, Zach McKinstry, and Javier Báez are all on the injured list, leaving breakout rookie Kevin McGonigle as the primary shortstop. Short's return provides experienced depth and a steadying presence as Detroit pushes through a critical stretch in the AL Central race.

Short’s journey to Motown this season has been winding. He signed a minor league deal with the New York Yankees over the offseason, spent spring training with the AL East club, and was later traded to the Nationals before landing back with the Tigers. For a team looking to solidify its infield without sacrificing future assets, this move offers a low-risk, high-upside solution.
