The Detroit Tigers entered the 2026 season with high hopes, but a sluggish start has exposed cracks in the roster—and one of the biggest concerns is brewing in the outfield. While much of the early-season narrative has focused on getting ace Tarik Skubal back healthy, the Tigers have another issue that could force their hand at the trade deadline: a Max Clark problem.

According to Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report, outfield help ranks as Detroit's top deadline need. And here's the twist: the Tigers' best internal option isn't ready. Clark, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, is still just 21 years old. In Triple-A this season, he's posted a modest .261 batting average with a .690 OPS—not the kind of numbers that scream "ready for the big leagues." As Miller put it, "Unless they're ready (they're not) to hand the center field reins to their 21-year-old... that means finding at least one outfielder on the trade block."

Riley Greene has been a bright spot, delivering a strong 2026 campaign. Once Kerry Carpenter returns from injury, he'll reclaim right field. But center field remains a glaring hole. The Tigers have cycled through Matt Vierling, Javier Báez, Wenceel Pérez, and Gage Workman—none of whom have locked down the position. While they're not the worst options in the league, there's clearly room for an upgrade.

In a perfect world, Clark would be the answer. But with his development still in progress, Detroit's front office faces a tough decision. And with Skubal entering the final year of his club control, the Tigers can't afford to waste a season. If they want to make a playoff push, a desperate trade deadline move might be their only play.
