It was going so well until it wasn’t.

The Tigers were cruising. They had the lead, the momentum, and Keider Montero was dealing. Then, in the blink of an eye, it all unraveled. Kansas City rallied late, snatching a 4-3 win in the series opener and reminding everyone just how unforgiving the AL Central race can be.

Coming off a much-needed off day on Thursday, Detroit arrived in Kauffman Stadium with one goal: claw their way back toward the top of a division that's as tight as any in baseball. Every game matters, even in March and April. With Montero on the mound and Kris Bubic opposing for the Royals, the Tigers were hoping to set the tone early.

And they did. After a quiet first inning, Riley Greene sparked the second with a double. Wenceel Perez followed with a single, putting runners on the corners. Spencer Torkelson then grounded into a double play, but Greene crossed the plate—Detroit had a 1-0 lead. It wasn't flashy, but it was efficient.

But Kansas City answered quickly. With two outs in the bottom of the second, Jac Caglianone doubled, and Isaac Collins drove him home with a single. Tie game.

The Tigers threatened again in the third when Zack Short drew a leadoff walk. Kevin McGonigle advanced him with a force out, then moved to second on a wild pitch. His aggressive baserunning was a spark, but the inning fizzled on a groundout. Montero, meanwhile, kept rolling—retiring seven straight Royals at one point.

In the fifth, Short walked again with one out. But again, the Tigers couldn't capitalize. Meanwhile, the Royals started to chip away, and Detroit's early promise faded into a frustrating loss.

It was a game that had all the ingredients for a win—solid pitching, timely baserunning, and early scoring. But baseball, especially in a division this tight, has a way of reminding you that nothing is guaranteed until the final out.
