After a 13-month absence from the pitch, U.S. Women’s National Team defender Tierna Davidson is back in the fold, bringing a renewed sense of gratitude and perspective to the squad as they prepare for a crucial three-match series against Japan. Her return marks a significant moment, not just for her personally, but for a USWNT backline that can benefit from her veteran presence.

Davidson's last international cap was ironically also against Japan, back in February 2025 at the SheBelieves Cup. Since then, she has watched from the sidelines as head coach Emma Hayes ushered in a new era, giving 16 players their national team debuts in a year of significant evolution. "In some ways, I feel like the new player coming back in," Davidson admitted, praising the influx of talent. "It’s been really fun to watch... to be able to see so many people get that opportunity and do so well has been really encouraging."

This comeback is particularly poignant, as it represents Davidson's second major return from an ACL injury. After helping secure a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she suffered a torn ACL in 2022 during NWSL play. That experience has profoundly shaped her outlook. "I’m really trying to be present and focus on gratitude," she shared. "Especially after going through this injury process twice, to be able to do what I love as a job is something that I think is easy to take for granted... It’s something that is so important to make sure that I value every time."

Her perspective is a powerful reminder of the resilience required at the sport's highest level. Despite the long layoff, Davidson's 67 international caps still rank fifth-most on the current roster, and her leadership will be vital. The USWNT faces a formidable test against a fifth-ranked Japanese team that defeated them 2-1 in their last meeting and has been in scintillating form. Davidson's composure and experience could be the stabilizing force the defense needs to contain Japan's dynamic attack, setting the stage for an intense and compelling series.
