The reigning champions will be taking the court shorthanded Tuesday night, as Thunder star Jalen Williams has officially been ruled out for Game 1 against the Lakers. The dynamic wing is sidelined with a Grade 1 hamstring strain, leaving a noticeable gap in Oklahoma City's lineup.
"He's progressing according to plan, I would say," Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault shared with the media on Monday. "In terms of a timeline, we're not going to release that. We'll continue to let you guys know on a week-to-week basis."
This season has been a battle with injuries for Williams, who managed to suit up for just 33 games—less than half of the regular season. It's been a tough road: he missed the first 19 games (during which the Thunder went an impressive 18-1) recovering from offseason right wrist surgery. Then, between January and February, he sat out 10 games with a right hamstring strain. After a brief two-game return, he aggravated the injury and missed another five weeks.
There was some hope when Williams played in the first two games of Oklahoma City's first-round series against the Suns. He averaged 20.5 points, 5.0 assists, and 4.0 rebounds per game—a promising sign after his regular-season average of 17.1 points. But during Game 2 on April 22, he suffered a Grade 1 left hamstring strain.
Typically, Grade 1 hamstring strains heal within one to two weeks, which suggested Williams could return by the start of the next round. However, Daigneault's cautious comments hint that the injury might be more stubborn than initially thought. For Thunder fans, this is a tough blow, especially given how crucial Williams is to their championship aspirations.
On the other side of the court, the Lakers will also be missing a key piece, as Luka Doncic has been ruled out for Game 1. With both teams shorthanded, Tuesday night's matchup promises to be a test of depth and resilience.
