Three Kansas student-athletes were honored Wednesday night at the annual Kansas Football Legends and Scholars Dinner, hosted by the Coach Bill Snyder Sunflower Chapter of the National Football Foundation. The event took place at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, celebrating both the state's top football contributors and its brightest scholar-athletes.

Nemaha Central quarterback Carter Hajek took home the prestigious Bernie Kish Award, recognizing him as Kansas' top football student-athlete. A three-time state champion with the Thunder—including the 2025 2A State Championship—Hajek also earned 2A Player of the Year honors. He was one of just 82 student-athletes nationwide named to the National Team of Distinction. "It means a lot because there were a lot of other great honorees," Hajek said. "It's super cool to see my hard work over the past four years be recognized." With a 3.8 GPA, he will continue his playing career at Emporia State.

Jefferson West defensive lineman Osiris Unruh was also recognized among the state's elite, maintaining a stellar 4.03 GPA throughout high school. Unruh's athletic prowess extends beyond the gridiron—he is also the 4A Heavyweight State Champion in wrestling. "I don't take this award lightly," Unruh shared. "I've worked really hard to get it, so it's just nice to see what all my hard work has amounted to." He has committed to Pittsburg State to continue his football journey.

Santa Fe Trail center Alex Strother rounded out the honorees, celebrated for his dual commitment to academics and athletics. With a perfect 4.0 GPA, Strother is the Class of 2026 Salutatorian. "It's actually great, not to only be recognized for football but for the effort I put in academically," he said. "It's nice to see all the other people in the room who also dedicate their time and effort to everything in the community." Strother will attend Emporia State, where he plans to begin his coaching career as a student assistant.

These three athletes exemplify the balance of hard work, discipline, and excellence—on the field and in the classroom. Their stories remind us that true champions are built with grit, grades, and grace.
