The NCAA Gymnastics Championships are set, and while the Utah Red Rocks won't be competing as a team for the first time in nearly five decades, the program's legacy of excellence will still be on full display. Three standout gymnasts—Avery Neff, Ana Padurariu, and Ella Zirbes—have earned the right to compete as individual qualifiers, ensuring Utah's presence on the sport's biggest stage.
All three athletes will take the floor in the second semifinal this Thursday in Fort Worth, Texas. For Utah head coach Carly Dockendorf, it's a chance to celebrate their individual dedication. "We’re looking forward to supporting these three amazing women," Dockendorf said. "It's a great opportunity for them to collect some accolades on events they’ve excelled at all year. Their individual work is going to be showcased, and that’s what it’s all about."
The journey to Fort Worth is a unique one for each gymnast. Senior Ana Padurariu, the Big 12 Specialist of the Year, will compete on the balance beam. After posting back-to-back 9.9s at regionals to secure her spot, she views this as a perfect finale. "This extra opportunity is truly just a cherry on top," Padurariu shared. "It feels like a victory lap for one last routine."
She'll be rotating alongside teammate Ella Zirbes, who qualified on floor exercise after scoring a 9.925 in the regional final. For Zirbes, a Minnesota native, competing alongside the University of Minnesota adds a special hometown twist, but having Padurariu as a teammate is the real bonus. "I’m so honored to be at her last meet with her," Zirbes said. "She’s a calm person to be with during a meet, and it’s a really special way for her to go out."
Completing the trio is Avery Neff, who will bring her talents to the vault competition. While the team's streak has ended, the determination and grace of these three Red Rocks promise to deliver the high-flying, precision performances that define championship gymnastics. It's a testament to their resilience and skill, proving that even without the team banner, Utah's spirit soars.
