The Cleveland Cavaliers flew to Detroit full of confidence as favorites in this Eastern Conference Semifinals matchup, but they're heading home in a 0-2 hole—and now a fresh injury concern around James Harden threatens to make their climb even steeper.
The Pistons took Game 2 with a 107-97 victory, fueled by Cade Cunningham's dominant fourth-quarter performance. The young star scored 12 of his 25 points in the final frame, finishing with a double-double (10 assists) and outshining both Donovan Mitchell and James Harden when it mattered most.
Now, on top of a must-win situation in Cleveland, a possible hand injury to "The Beard" is clouding the picture. Cleveland.com's Chris Fedor reported after Game 2 that Harden showed signs of a left hand issue, noting he was seen in an extended conversation with a Cavs trainer while keeping his left hand concealed in his jacket pocket. Fedor added it "sounded as if there was an ice bag on his left hand," though the team has not issued an official injury status ahead of Game 3.
The timing couldn't be worse for Cleveland. Harden, 36, struggled mightily in Game 2, finishing with just 10 points on 3-of-13 shooting. He missed all four of his three-point attempts and committed four turnovers, including a costly giveaway in the final minute that extinguished the Cavs' comeback hopes. His fourth-quarter performance was particularly concerning: no points, just one shot attempt, and a game-high -15 plus/minus. Through two games, he has 11 turnovers compared to just nine baskets.
For a team already facing a daunting 0-2 deficit, Harden's health—and his ability to bounce back—will be the biggest factor in whether the Cavaliers can mount a season-saving comeback.
