Every golfer wants to shave strokes off their score, but the real secret to improvement isn't just about hitting longer drives or sinking more putts—it's about avoiding the big mistakes that derail your round. According to the latest Arccos Annual Distance Report, the biggest difference between good and bad golfers comes down to one thing: how badly they miss off the tee.

You might think low-handicap players are significantly more accurate, but the data tells a surprising story. Low single-digit handicaps (0–5) hit about 50 percent of fairways, while high-handicap players (30+) hit 40 percent. Over 18 holes, that's only one or two more fairways for the better player—a much smaller gap than most expect.

So, what really separates them? It's the severity of their misses. Arccos defines a "wayward drive" as any tee shot that leads to a penalty stroke or a recovery situation—think punch-outs, layups, or lost balls. And this is where the divide becomes stark: low-handicap golfers hit only about 12 percent of their tee shots into this trouble zone, while high-handicap players suffer wayward drives far more often.

In other words, good golfers don't just hit more fairways—they keep their misses in play. For the average player, cutting down on those high-cost errors is the fastest path to lower scores. Focus on keeping the ball in the game off the tee, and you'll see your handicap drop faster than you ever imagined.
