Despite flaws on their end, FC Bayern have serious reasons to complain about poor officiating vs PSG.

In a Champions League clash that promised fireworks, Paris Saint-Germain dealt Bayern Munich a bitter defeat, leaving the Bavarians to rue not only their own missed chances but also a series of contentious refereeing decisions that swung the momentum firmly against them. Bayern coach Vincent Kompany didn't hold back his frustration, pointing to two pivotal incidents that he believes highlight a troubling inconsistency in officiating—one that ultimately tilted the game in PSG's favor.

The first flashpoint came when a handball by PSG's João Neves went unpunished. Under the rules, the decision to let play continue was technically defensible: the shot came from a teammate, was heading away from goal, and wasn't intercepted by a Bayern player. But Kompany argued that the same leniency wasn't applied to his side. In the first leg, a penalty was awarded against Bayern's Alphonso Davies for a handball that, upon closer inspection, was a clear misjudgment. The ball struck Davies' body first before deflecting onto his hand, and the change in direction meant it couldn't have reached the goal. Yet, the referee enthusiastically pointed to the spot, gifting PSG a free goal. The VAR, surprisingly, didn't intervene to correct the call.

Kompany's biggest grievance, however, was reserved for referee João Pinheiro. "Why is it not a red card? I don’t understand. Why we concede a penalty in Paris and we don’t receive one here?" he told CBS Sports Golazo. "I understand the rules, but the hand was above his head. It felt like there was a hand that tilted it to the wrong side for us." While Kompany stopped short of blaming the loss entirely on the officiating, he stressed that such glaring inconsistencies have no place in a high-stakes Champions League fixture. After all, the best referees are the ones you barely notice—and in this match, the spotlight was firmly on the man in the middle.
