There's a new breed of attacker emerging in European football, and he's got all the hallmarks of a player built for Liverpool. Stylistically, he draws heavy comparisons to Hugo Ekitike—and that's exactly the kind of profile sporting director Richard Hughes is hunting for.
Since arriving at Anfield, Hughes has made one thing crystal clear: this is a long-term project. Liverpool's recruitment isn't about quick fixes or chasing instant silverware anymore. It's about building a squad that can dominate for the next decade.
That forward-thinking approach is already visible in the club's recent transfer business. Liverpool have snapped up some of Europe's brightest young prospects—names like Will Wright, Armin Pecsi, Ifeanyi Ndukwe, and Mor Talla Ndiaye are all part of the new wave. At the same time, they've invested heavily in first-team-ready youngsters such as Florian Wirtz, Giovanni Leoni, Jeremy Jacquet, and Milos Kerkez.
But arguably, Hughes' best piece of business so far has been Ekitike himself. The French forward has quickly become a fan favourite and was developing into one of Liverpool's most vital attacking players this season—until an untimely injury cut his momentum short.
What makes Ekitike so special is that he's not your traditional number nine. He doesn't just lurk in the box waiting for tap-ins. Instead, he drops deep, links play, carries the ball forward, and thrives in one-on-one situations. That blend of technical quality, intelligent movement, and sheer unpredictability is exactly what Liverpool look for in an attacker.
He's a quintessential Liverpool forward—cut from the same cloth as Roberto Firmino and Daniel Sturridge before him. And now, the Reds may be searching for another player with that same DNA.
Interestingly, while Hughes has focused heavily on signing young defenders, he hasn't brought in many attacking prospects beyond Wright. Liverpool do have more options at youth level in attack, but that shouldn't stop the club's sporting brain trust from finding the next Ekitike-style talent—especially one who could be the perfect fit for Anfield's future.
