The Chicago Sky have a noticeably different roster after WNBA free agency. Chicago coach Tyler Marsh defended its moves amid backlash.

For the third straight offseason, the Chicago Sky are undergoing a dramatic transformation. Under General Manager Jeff Pagliocca, significant roster turnover has become the norm, with key starters like Angel Reese and Ariel Atkins departing via trade and the team moving on from players such as Chennedy Carter. The 2026 WNBA free agency period has accelerated this rebuild, bringing a fresh wave of talent to the Windy City.

The Sky have aggressively retooled, signing veteran guard Skylar Diggins-Smith, defensive standout DiJonai Carrington, and reuniting with 2021 championship forward Azurá Stevens. The trade for Ariel Atkins also netted promising forward Rickea Jackson. This influx of new faces has sparked considerable debate among fans and analysts, prompting Head Coach Tyler Marsh to address the criticism head-on.

"What I feel good about is that you don't land the players we've landed without doing something right," Marsh stated, defending the front office's vision. "We're heading in the right direction. We're doing things the right way. We have the right people in the building."

Marsh acknowledged the team is aware of the external noise, noting, "Players see the negative things said daily. We're all engaged with social media and what's happening around us." He then highlighted why Chicago has become a destination, pointing to Diggins-Smith's veteran leadership and ability to discern "the fake from the real" as a cornerstone for the new-look squad's culture and on-court identity.
