Glamorgan have unearthed a gem in teenage bowling sensation Tom Norton, who announced his arrival on the first-class stage in spectacular fashion with a record-breaking hat-trick on his County Championship debut. The 18-year-old seamer, born and raised in Abergavenny, produced a performance that will be talked about for generations.
Handed his first-class debut by Glamorgan, Norton wasted no time making an impression. After the hosts elected to field first in Cardiff, Somerset posted 354 in their first innings, with Norton claiming a respectable 3-75. But it was in the visitors' second innings that the young quick truly etched his name into the record books.
With three consecutive deliveries, Norton ripped through Somerset's top order, sending shockwaves through Sophia Gardens. First, England hopeful James Rew gloved to Asa Tribe at slip. Next, Tom Lammonby edged to wicketkeeper Chris Cooke without scoring. Then came the moment of magic—Archie Vaughan, son of 2005 Ashes-winning captain Michael, saw a ball rattle into his pads. The umpire's finger went up, and Norton was mobbed by his jubilant teammates.
The hat-trick was more than just a personal milestone—it was historic. Norton became the youngest player ever to take a first-class hat-trick for Glamorgan, the youngest on record to achieve the feat on debut for any team, and the first player of any age to take a Championship hat-trick on debut since 1906. The previous Glamorgan record-holder was England paceman Jeff Jones, who was 20 when he accomplished the feat back in 1962.
Norton finished with figures of 4-61 as Somerset were dismissed for 157, setting up a thrilling chase. Glamorgan dug deep to reach 285-8, securing a memorable victory—their first home win in Division One. For Norton, the emotions were overwhelming.
"I never thought this would happen," he said. "I was happy to get my first wicket to get me off my mark in first-class cricket... a first wicket in first-class cricket is something special, it doesn't get taken away from you ever in your life. But to take a hat-trick on my debut is something I'll cherish for the rest of my life. It's a really special feel."
