May 14—Area teams appear to have saved some of their best baseball for the end of the regular season, a good sign with the start of postseason play just two weeks away. As the regular season winds down, area baseball teams are peaking at just the right time—a promising sign with postseason play just two weeks away. Here's a closer look at how the top contenders are shaping up:

1. Unity Rockets (20-6)
Even after dropping three straight games, the Rockets hold firm at No. 1, thanks to the momentum from their big win over St. Joseph-Ogden on May 4. Two of those losses came against two-time defending Class 1A state champion Ottawa Marquette, and the third was an eight-inning battle with Mt. Zion. That kind of competition keeps a team battle-tested.

2. St. Joseph-Ogden Spartans
The Spartans have rebounded nicely from their 5-2 loss to IPC rival Unity, now riding a five-game winning streak. Senior All-State outfielder Trevor Ames has been unstoppable during this stretch, crushing six home runs to lead a deep, dangerous lineup.

3. Monticello Sages
After a blistering 21-0 start—just shy of their program-record 22-0 run in 2024—the Sages have cooled off slightly, losing three of their last nine. No need to sound alarms, though. With Koyie Williams, Jax Bailey, and Grant Kiger leading the charge, Monticello is poised to rediscover its early-season form.

4. Champaign Central Maroons
John Staab's squad has been red-hot over the past month, winning 14 of their last 15 games. They're closing in on at least a share of the Big 12 Conference title, with only a two-game series against Danville standing in their way. The Maroons control their own destiny.

5. Mahomet-Seymour Bulldogs
The Bulldogs locked up the Apollo Conference title with a 5-3 win over Charleston last Thursday. That victory snapped what was originally a three-game skid, but a retroactive forfeit by Mt. Zion (due to a pitch count error) erased an earlier loss, keeping Mahomet-Seymour on track.

6. Danville Vikings
A three-game losing streak in late April seems to have lit a fire under Cruz Dubois and the Vikings. They've won five of their last six, with the bats exploding for 61 runs during a four-game winning streak. This team is dangerous when they're hot.

7. Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond Trojans
The Trojans have been surging since their last loss on April 22, winning six straight games. But it's their pitching that's stealing the show—allowing just five runs total during that stretch, including three shutout victories. That's championship-caliber stuff.

8. Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin Knights
Despite a 10-4 home loss to Mahomet-Seymour on Wednesday, the Knights have still won eight of their last nine games. Their offense has been balanced and explosive—67 of their 239 hits this season have gone for extra bases, proving they can score in bunches from anywhere in the lineup.
