The Miami Dolphins didn't expect to land Jacob Rodriguez in the NFL Draft—but now that they have him, they believe the rookie linebacker is poised to become a leader on and off the field. With a reputation for being instinctive, consistent, and relentlessly dedicated, Rodriguez is turning heads in South Florida.
Dolphins linebacker coach Al Washington, in his first year with the team, can't stop praising Rodriguez's most impressive trait: he almost never misses a tackle. "He's incredibly instinctive," Washington said. "I think he's really efficient and a really good tackler. There are two types of tackling—the old-school knock-them-back style from the '90s, and then the modern open-field approach. Jacob has both, but what stood out to me is his high percentage of tackles made in space. That's rare."
Washington, who previously coached at Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Michigan, knows what it takes to compete at the highest level. "Coming from college to the NFL, you watch tape and see a lot of guys struggle in the open field. But at this level, every running back is athletic—even the second-stringers. So being able to get into a good base and strike properly in space is special. Jacob does that consistently."
The Dolphins used a second-round pick on Rodriguez, the tackling machine from Texas Tech whose work ethic off the field matches his production on it. "It's only been about a week, but he's been incredibly impressive in terms of his approach," Washington added. "He's dedicated, he's focused, and he's ready to lead."
For Dolphins fans, Rodriguez represents more than just a draft pick—he's a player who could anchor the defense for years to come. And for those who love the game, watching a young linebacker with this kind of instinct and discipline is a reminder that football's future is in good hands.
